Design System, User Interface Design, User Experience Design, Prototype As part of a lean design team of three at Deloitte Studios, I partnered with Anthem Healthcare to improve their care management platform. Our engagement was structured in two phases: first, to build out their current state design system, and second, to envision and prototype the future state experience through user-centered design.
ChallengeAnthem’s care management platform was fragmented, relying on inconsistent UI components and requiring case managers to juggle multiple systems to complete daily tasks. This created inefficiencies, frustration, and errors in patient care. Anthem needed both immediate improvements to its design foundation and a long-term vision for a more intuitive, integrated experience.
Phase 1: Current State Design System
Conducted a UI audit of existing Anthem components.
Identified inconsistencies in typography, iconography, and interaction patterns.
Built a comprehensive design system including typography, color palette, icon sets, accessibility guidelines, and component library.
Created documentation to enable scalable design and faster production.
Phase 2: Future State Prototype Facilitated user workshops to uncover case manager pain points. Created user personas (e.g., Mary, a case manager) to capture motivations, goals, and frustrations. Mapped user journeys to highlight inefficiencies in current workflows. Designed and delivered a future vision prototype that streamlined case management tasks into a unified, intuitive dashboard. Presented current vs. future state comparisons to illustrate impact and alignment with user needs.
Outcomes Delivered Anthem’s first comprehensive design system, enabling consistent UI across teams.
Produced a future vision prototype that became the foundation for Anthem’s next-gen care management platform.
Helped Anthem stakeholders visualize the impact of user-centered design in improving both case manager efficiency and patient care outcomes.
