Design System, User Interface DesignNewYork-Presbyterian engaged our team to enhance their digital experience by modernizing page layouts and establishing a scalable design system. As a User Interface Designer and design system expert, I was responsible for creating consistent, functional, and flexible design foundations that would support both current initiatives and future product development.

ChallengeThe existing digital framework lacked cohesion and scalability, making it difficult for designers and developers to maintain visual consistency across pages. Without a centralized design system, design quality was inconsistent and development efficiency suffered. The challenge was to establish a reliable system that could evolve with the product, while simultaneously contributing to page design and ensuring that new components worked seamlessly across platforms.
ApproachI collaborated closely with the developer and product manager to audit existing components and identify gaps in the system. From there, I defined reusable UI patterns, established clear design tokens, and ensured all components adhered to accessibility standards. In parallel, I worked on the design of key pages, applying the system in real time to validate its usability and scalability. Frequent cross-functional reviews allowed us to quickly iterate and align on best practices, ensuring that the system met both design and engineering needs.
Contributions Designed page layouts that incorpared consistent, system-driven components. Built and documented a scalable design system to guide future teams. Partnered with developers to ensure components were properly implemented and functional.
OutcomeThe project resulted in a cohesive, functional design system that streamlined the design-to-development process and created a consistent user experience across NYP’s digital properties. The system not only improved efficiency for the current team but also laid the groundwork for future designers and developers to build confidently and at scale.
